The i-calQ COVID-19 Rapid Test Strips are used to determine viral status amid the global pandemic using whole blood, serum, or plasma. This assay is a single-use, disposable immunoassay that is read with a smartphone-based image analysis algorithm. The assay can be used to screen for COVID-19 IgG and IgM. Presence of COVID-19 in the human body will trigger an immune response; causing the production of two key antibodies: IgG and IgM. The presence of the two, or lack of, is used to determine an individual’s viral status, be that: Positive, Negative, or Exposed. The COVID-19 assay utilizes affinity chromatography. Antibodies are developed with a high affinity for COVID-19 IgG and IgM, these antibodies grab onto the IgG and IgM. These antibodies adhered to IgG and IgM produce a visible marker, much like an over-the-counter pregnancy test. The optical signal from the assay can be detected with the smartphone camera to quantify the amount of each antibody based on the intensity of the signal. With further research and guidance from organizations such as the CDC and WHO, guidelines on antibody count will allow for better treatment and containment of the virus. The smartphone application is easy to use and does not require internet connection. Results can be transferred from the smartphone to any organization through wifi and bluetooth connection. The application can be updated to take action against future infectious diseases.
